Miscellaneous Gear

Predator hunting often comes down to preparation, and the right accessories can make a significant difference in comfort, efficiency, and overall success in the field.

There’s a wide range of miscellaneous gear that hunters may want, need, or eventually add to their setup over time. In this section, we highlight some of the additional equipment we rely on — from flashlights and recovery drags to knives and other practical accessories that make time in the field smoother and more efficient.

While these items may not always get the spotlight, they play an important role during a hunt or when spending long hours on stand. Small details can make a big difference when conditions are less than ideal.

As with all our gear, we focus on equipment that has proven dependable and useful through real-world use — tools that add value without unnecessary complication.

Knives
Over the years, we’ve used countless knives — here you’ll find a curated selection of my personal favorites. Knives come in a wide range of prices, but some of the best I’ve found are affordable, lesser-known brands that perform just as well as the big names. Like any great tool, a knife is only as good as the care you give it and the edge you maintain.

Game Drags
Pocket drags and other game drags make recovery easier on those long walks across the field. In the areas we hunt, we respect landowners and recover game on foot — making a reliable drag a crucial tool in the process.

Gloves
Gloves are a crucial piece of gear for hunting any game, especially during night hunts for coyotes and other predators. They protect your hands from the elements and from the work that goes into setting up blinds and recovering game. Gloves are a personal preference, but here I’ll share a few of my trusted favorites.

Boots
Boots are another piece of equipment that can make a hunt either enjoyable or miserable. Depending on the weather, we wear a few different styles. In warmer conditions, we prefer XTRATUF boots for their comfort and easy slip-on design. When temperatures drop, we switch to a heavier lace-up boot with better insulation to keep our feet warm and ready for long days in the field.

Lights
Lights are a must-have tool for hunting predators at night. We use a combination of standard flashlights and headlamps depending on the situation. For flashlights, we rely on rechargeable NEBO and Streamlight models for their rugged durability and long battery life. When it comes to headlamps, we’ve found that even the more affordable Coast brands perform reliably and get the job done.

Scent Control
Scent control is essential when predator hunting, especially for coyotes. You can have the perfect stand set up, only for a sudden wind shift to give you away. Coyotes are smart, cautious animals that instinctively try to get downwind of a call — and they can scent you quickly. We use a mix of products from Wildlife Research, ScentLok, and other trusted brands, but the most important factor is playing the wind in your favor and taking the shot before your scent gives you away.
